FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Copyright?
This is granted to the creator of a musical work by the Copyright Designs & Patents Act 1988.
What does it cover?
This gives you, the creator, the sole and exclusive right to do certain things with your songs, such as perform them, publish them, and issue recordings of them.
How do I get copyright on my songs?
The key point is to establish when your songs were created. An easy way is to make a recording or take a hand-written copy of your song, and post it to yourself. Always remember to put the song title(s) and date on the back of the envelope. Don't open the envelope when you get it back! This establishes exactly when the song came into existence.
How long does copyright last for?
The period of copyright protection is currently life of the creator plus a further 70 years.
Who are we?
We are a new independent publishing company, based in Croydon, which has been set up to service the talent in the Croydon area. The owners have a wide range of knowledge of all aspects of the music business.
How do I get WDML to listen to my songs?
WDML wants to make it easy for you to get your songs to us to hear.
If you have a demo CD, tape or DAT, please send them to us and our Creative Director will listen to them. If you do not have any demos, please forward a copy of the lyrics.
In certain circumstances, we may ask you to come along and meet us in a central Croydon venue, and to perform your songs live, if this is easier for you. It may also be easier for us to come along to one of your gigs, if you are currently performing.
Why sign to World Domination?
There are many reasons:
It will enhance your chances of getting a record deal if you have a publisher.
If you have released your own CD, then we will waive mechanical royalties to ease cash flow.
Do you perform your own songs ?
Do you have more than 10 gigs per year?
If so, you are probably losing out on income due to you. Each venue pays an amount to The Performing Right Society to play music. If the venue plays your songs (i.e. you perform them,) then you should get some share of the PRS fee. WDML will help you get this by registering your works with PRS and liaising with you to ensure your gigs are registered under the PRS Gigs & Clubs scheme.
There are other areas of income that might come your way such as television, radio, ringtones, advertising etc. If your songs are assigned to a publisher such as WDML, you can benefit from our expertise in music licensing and achieve the proper rate for your songs. We will ensure any monies due are collected and paid over to you.
What happens if WDML is interested in my songs?
We will offer you our standard contract, which we are happy for you to show to your own legal advisors.
- We will register your works with the collecting societies.
- We will liaise with you on details of any live performances.
- We will make any registrations necessary to collect this income.
- We will generally administer all rights.
Please note that WDML's administration is provided by Hollywoods Royalty Services, who are an independent music and media accounting service.
Can you offer anything else?
Yes, through our associated service, Hollywoods Royalty Services, we can provide or arrange to provide a full accounting and business affairs function. We have access to a wide range of professionals, all of whom have extensive music industry knowledge and expertise.
And any more?
Well, yes. We have dealt with music works, but WDML is also open to other intellectual property, such as books, short stories, ringtones, etc., etc. If you have a creation that enjoys copyright protection, please come and talk to us first.
