Having spent 45 years as a small works builder and decorator in Southern England, Barry, at an age when most people are winding down in life , has now decided to seriously launch a new career in showbiz! Married to Elizabeth for over 40 years and with two adult sons with families of their own, Barry decided to really go for it using his other talents - harmonica playing, lyric writing and poetry.
Being an avid jazz fan, he had struck up a great friendship with English Jazz legend Humphrey Lyttleton , his manager Susan da Costa and the entire band ongoing since 1983.
One night at a gig with Humph and the band at the Bulls Head at Barnes in London, Barry casually asked Humph if he wouldn’t mind " Doing a bit of trumpet on my debut harmonica album." Humph agreed and the rest is history. That one night and those few words might well go down in history as the start of the most unusual path to fame ever!
The result of that night was the production of a beautiful CD of ballads from the American song book, plus "Building Dreams", an original track composed by Barry as the title track.
The CD, has now been played extensively on radio all over the world.
Barry had completely overdone it by building a state-of-the-art recording studio underneath his house in Tatsfield Surrey and finally had to sell the house and studio to clear the monumental debts! Dedication to the Arts just doesn’t come into it. All kinds of write-ups have been done about Barry and his CD including interviews on radio and the like, plus a very near miss with Barry actually getting it into Harrod’s music department in London. (Barry, in typical "builder style", wrote to Harrods and told them to forget the whole thing after he had had been kept waiting for weeks with no decision about it!) That, O best beloved, was the kiss of death for him in that area!
Having signed a contract with WORLD DOMINATION MUSIC, Barry’s future is finally looking great to say the least.
Via a website and self-taught Internet skills, Barry has forged a fantastic link to the Sinatra Family Website and a relationship with Nancy Sinatra herself no less!
From a little book of poetry entitled " Fireside poetry", Barry has had feedback from the likes of Michael Howard, Trini Lopez, and Nancy herself, not to mention a lot of Nancy’s fans who now send him "T" shirts from places like Miami and New York and love his poetry and the CD.
Ed Stewart ( Stewpot himself) used to regularly read out Barry’s "instant" poems on Radio Two on his Sunday afternoon programme, " Where Are You Now"?
